The factory specialised in the production of artificial silk (rayon/viscose), and so played a major part in the textile industry. Moreover, the former artificial silk factory had an impact on the local economy and jobs. In its heyday, the factory employed more than 500 people on a day-to-day basis.
Production too expensive
In the late 1990s, the production of artificial silk grew too expensive in the Netherlands, thus forcing the factory to close its doors. Since its closure in 2003, the ENKA premises have been transformed into a wonderful place to live, work and relax amidst numerous traces of history.
